I think they're greatly useful on smaller forums (unlike this one, 10 posts in less than 5 minutes ), so members can check out what happened while they haven't been online. I used it a lot in the first forum I signed up, as I was active, almost always I could check all new posts with that feature. It's definitely better than having to go to each board and look at the 'Last Post' column to see the news. It can also be used by Guests to see the amount of activity of a forum in general, the dates of the recent posts, and who are the active posters (less accurate on this one...). Great feature on less active forums, not much useful in larger ones that get >25 posts per day, I think... but I didn't think that much to write the stats.

I think that the recent post icon is very useful, though I don't use it that often. When I have the time, I look at the recent posts (On smaller sites) and I find which members are the most active, what some members are like by what they post, and how active the site is in general.

I rarely use this feature on forums where I'm a guest or a member. I find that I get a fuller idea of what the forum and members are like if I actually look around - as a few other people have stated, it's very difficult to grasp what's going on from a list of 15 or so posts.
I do, however, often use this feature on my own forum. Sometimes when there are quite a few members online it's easy to just click on the 'most recent posts' links to see who's posted what and then reply to it quickly (if needed). I know that I could just look at the forums themselves, but sometimes I find this method easier - especially if I'm doing other things at the same time. I suppose it could be seen as being pretty lazy, but sometimes it needs to be done!
So, in conclusion, I feel that this is a great feature. I wouldn't, like a couple of other people have mentioned, hide it from guests. I think it's up to the guest to choose how they wish to view the forum for the first time... and if it's relatively easy to see the most recent posts then they may be more inclined to join. Well, perhaps...

I don't particularly like this feauture. As admin on my board I don't use it or as a member on other proboards that I visit. We have it set at view 30 most recent posts and have had request from a member for it to be raised to at least 50. Our board is well divided and it is easy for members to to go the areas of most interest first. We try to encourage or members to be active as opposed to lurkers, but I feel the view 50 last posts makes it too easy for someone to quickly see what is happening without participating themselves. Also have members moaning that the posts on boards that they aren't interested in show up as well I would happily do without this function.

I, as a board owner, find it really useful.
The one enhancement I would like to see is to be able to nominate which boards appear in the most recent posts.
That way serious topics would be easier to monitor if chit-chat boards could be excluded from most recent posts.

Yes & no. On one hand: I like this feature as it's more convenient than going from board to board. On the other hand: I don't like this feature as my no-right click code doesn't work on these searched posts defeating the purpose of the code. That had nothing to do with the upgrade, BTW.

I use this quite a bit when looking for a RP, but don't know where to post or what thread to join..
I'm not sure that it's necessary for a forum to have, but I do find it usefull every once and a while when I'm bored and have nothing else to do, but look through the posts to find one i could join

I use it often to see if there have been any new developments in areas I might otherwise not glance at. I still go through the boards, but sometimes you accidentally miss something that way, just out of habit. I keep it at the 10 post view, since any more than that and what's the point?
I could probably do without this feature, but if I'm short on time and just want a quick glance to make sure everything runs smoothly, it is nice to have.
I'd never even thought of guests viewing it to see what's happening... I will certainly have to consider that in the future. I'm not sure if that is what I want it used for, but if it helps people become inclined to join...
I do admit it can be tedious at times, with general discussions and such; but as mentioned, some people utilize this feature above all others.

I love this feature and so do my members. They told me they feel lost without it.
I have a slow connection so it takes mine a while to load. However, once I am loaded, I appreciate it too.

Do you think that this is a good tool to have on a forum? Have you used it yourself? I wish we were able to have a way of viewing the new posts since our last visit, as on the V-Bulletin forums. I use this feature a lot when I go to other forums. I have my most current posts set at 100. When version 4.5 was first installed, this feature was not working correctly. I received many complaints about it. I'm glad it as been restored.
