I was warning them about it, and giving them some advice regarding that (I ban those IPs immediately whenever I make a board) Or should I just give a list of IPs that you should ban by default, to stop banned members returning easily?

If you don't know your own IP, here's a simple way to find out. If you're using Windows9x/Me, type WINIPCFG.exe in the command prompt For Windows 2K/XP, type IPCONFIG.exe instead If you have your ISP assign you dynamic IP, you could simply change your IP in the following steps: 1. Go to Start----> Run 2. type cmd.exe and enter 3. type in ipconfig /flushdns 4. type in ipconfig /release 5. type in ipconfig /renew 6. exit I believe what your are referring to is your network card's local IP address. This is usually assigned by the local router or you can set it to a fixed IP address of your choosing. It depends on the router, but all computers I've worked with set the internal IP address to something that starts with 192.168.0.x or 192.168.1.x. To find the IP address that the outside world sees then you have to use WhatismyIP.com or some other utility. If I use IPCONFIG it says my IP address is 192.168.1.102. There are probably millions of computers with this same address since it is set locally by the router. My external IP address that you would use to reach me over the internet is 75.91.x.x. At least that's what it is today. It could change tomorrow since it is a dynamic ip address and could change if the router at my Internet provider loses power or is reset. Most IP providers provide a dynamic (changing) IP address to private individuals but can supply a static (fixed) IP address if you want to pay extra for it.

I must say banning a particular IP address is a strong way to ban a person, mainly with a single IP address, but baning the person's E-mail and/or username also makes the ban that much stronger, especially if the person's IP address changes upon logging into the internet. I have known some programs have gotten around IP address bans, but you;re ensuring that you fully ban a person by e-mail AND/OR username as well. Some people who are the main administrators of a ProBoards forums ask about where to get info on IP addresses and such. I currently use 3 places:

thanks, a lot of this helped. i figured out i banned two members once because they owned the same IP. i said i personally did not care. their own fault, you know? well anyways, this is hard for my younger sibling to understand (who's 10, and sometimes goes on my account) and was trying to understand the IPS, and couldn't. next time, try making them a little less technical for the less-knowledged. thanks! *please remember, these are only my opinions, and suggestions! i want your instructions to be more simple and helpful so the others who dont know as much can understand* thanks!

I Think most of our Members are Really Cool and Play along with the Rules QC Well, within a 2 day period, I had to ban 12 different IP addresses and 7 e-mails, so no, 4 in over one year is nothing! (by the way, may be banning one more)

On my forum, there are about 30 people in the banned list, i am aware that they can comeback with a different ip, but im willing to keep on banning them.
My ip seems to change like every 2 days, is that normal?

Thanks for this post, as I had relatively little knowledge of IP addresses and was strongly considering banning an IP address permantely because 3 new accounts on my board shared the same one. Thinking it was the same person (with one account sharing the same e-mail), I queried them on their current computer activity etc and got the same replies. What worried me more was they logged on within minutes of each other. However, one ip address locator I used informed me that the IP address belonged to an Educational School Library in that area, so I decided not to ban the IP address and just the accounts for other misconduct for a period of time. Therefore, I advise if you see the same IP address not to jump to conclusions. The IP locator I used, if your interested is: www.ip-adress.com/ipaddresstolocation/Hope it helps and is a more accurate than some of those locators out there.

I can't thank you all enough for the valuable information in this thread. I had a few problems with vindictive people registering on my site within the first few days and banned three IP addresses, one of which also seems to have been shared by an innocent party. Taking the above information on board, I have now un-banned all IP addresses; I can always implement a temporary ban that can be lifted if there's a problem with another member. For an Admin novice like myself, these boards are a revelation! I've spent more time reading here today than on my own Forum. Fox

We have had dozens of spammers attempting to re-enter our forum after having been banned. Using the wildcard banning technique has worked wonders in keeping out the afore mentioned individuals while still allowing us to keep registrations open for serious members.

Interesting, the wild card banning is done as 123.456.***.*** With an aserisk for each potential number, not just one for the whole set.
That explains why when I tested wild card banning as 123.456.*.* it didn't work... ( The 123.456.*.* is how many other forums use wild card banning. )
But even still, being able to wild card ban doesn't really solve anything if they can change their whole ip at any given time...

I recently red lots of stuff about how ISP's delegate address space, and how it very much resembles a factory's products making it down to the end user.
IP space breaks down like this:
At the highest level is the IANA, which "owns" all the address space in the world and has them in trust to manage them.
Next down, by continent, is a regional internet registry. ARIN, APNIC, and RIPE and maybe others are all the heavyweights under IANA, each handling a huge block of IP space.
Sub-registries may serve smaller areas, until you get down to a provider that subscribed to a registry for the IP space.
Once you have a service provider, you have ownership of IP space, so to speak.
From there, it's all business.
Subscribers and sub-subscribers break down the IP space further and further until we get to a single organization at the bottom level of the "ISP food chain".
From there, things go a little diferent.
If it's a static address assignment to a company, they use it as-is however they see fit.
if it's assigned dynamically to a customer (dialup for example), they probably get dynamic IPs, or possibly share a single IP through NAT.

I realize you will notice that I'm a new poster here but I do have a question I need info on. I've read all of these post about IP search's and ban's. What I experienced lately on another board is a member who is not an administration or moderator who is checking poster's IP address'. How is it possible for somone to check my IP address and not have the right's to do so. I do not want to visit the site again if this is possible. As mentioned earlier, this is invading someones privacy. For the admins to know it is fine. It's needed to control the boards.

I Think only The Owners of Proboards can Look at the main admins IP Addresses - every once in awhile the folks who implemented the TOS Check your Forum Over - No Other Members Should be Able to See IP Adresses - in the ADMIN area there's a setting so that other Staff can or can not - I see no reason for my Staff to See another persons IP - But my Staff can Ban all 3 the Email - IP and Username - i have had to perma ban one guy that spammed 59 times in one hour - i got upset QC
