I'm having a bit of an issue with maintaining interest among new members on my RP forum. Most prospective members make a forum account and also join the site's Discord server, where they talk with current members, throw around character ideas and possible plots, ask questions, etc. However, the majority go inactive fairly quickly afterwards. While I know I can't exactly force people to participate (and I don't want to do that either), I'm at a loss for what I can do to encourage site activity.
What I have in place currently:
- Responding to new members' questions asap, personally welcoming them in the server, brainstorming ideas with them
- A rule that entitles newcomers to two free items from our site's monetary shop (which lets them buy different items or species to play as, so the 2-free-item rule can encourage members to create a character without monetary restrictions initially)
- Currency bonuses for milestones that can be achieved through roleplaying or simply by posting/general site activity (one of them as simple as creating one's first character)
- Guidebook board with a thread detailing all of the site's important systems/functions in one easy-to-read guide, from the game systems to how to edit one's mini-profile (the theme I use has certain requirements for editing one's profile), as well as other separate threads/guides within the board
In addition to this I've been doing what I can in my spare time to advertise the site on numerous platforms and other forums/Discord servers. I realize the best thing to do is to be persistent in advertising and continue welcoming newcomers and incorporating them into the community, but I was wondering how others have kept new members interested. What other things have you done to encourage activity and reduce the amount of ghost members?
