HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP I am spending way to much time trying to come up with the perfect skin and colour combo for my forum. That i find i am not attending to other things both on the board and in my life. Link Removed is a parenting forum and general chat. I like the the theme of treasures but not finding things to go with it. I really respect everyones opinions on here and kinda feel ur the professionals. can someone help guide me in the right direction on where to go with my colours and hopefully once i get the right colours I can fly with the rest of it. Thank you in advance Hi, please be sure to read the rules before posting. Questions like the one you asked should be posted in the Get Opinions About Your Board board, as this thread is reserved solely for discussion on colors in general, not specific forums.

cool, i want the bad colors skin!! i think that almost all colors go really well with black, especially if theres gradients involved, with a black background, it looks nice, and isn't too hard on the eyes

Can you make your category background transparent instead of color?

When I'm making skins for my website, December.com makes it a lot easier. A lot of times I use the hues area and stay in the same box, in the same column. Then I find colors that match really well. But usually it involves a lot of tweaking, with changing boxes but still using the same formula. Eventually I find ones that work and don't kill the eyes.
I personally prefer lighter skins, such as light green, blue, brown, or grey. To me, if the graphics are worked right, then they're the prettiest type of skins.

I use colors depending on what the forum is. Like darker colors for vampire sites, lighter colors for things like buffy, I try to base color on theme. I'm an art major in college so I generally see colors different than most people but I use a monotone color theme sticking with a really dark background and lighter text or light background and darker text but never guady looking I try to keep it so it looks like it belongs there along with looking at things like what is needed for colors and the style the background should be in. Like if it should be blue and green because of the background. I always make my banner and find what I want for a background first and then I look for the colors based on that decision.

I like to go for black and white backgrounds. I stick with one background and the same color schemes for all my skins. It makes my life so much easier. Then I change the old/new tags and the title pic. It ensures that you stick with your theme.

No matter how good a skin is, you can get bored of it after a while. I try to make four or five skins for my forums, all of them significantly different from one another. After all, people have different tastes and having to put up with the admin's taste alone can sometimes be a deterrent.
That said, themed skins are definitely better than non-themed skins. Coming across as incompetent about the theme of their forum doesn't do an admin any favours.
My favourite feature of a skin is a fixed picture in the background (again, themed rather than not). I don't like having a background that's the same colour as the stuff that should be in the foreground...

I went into making my Forum without ANY clue on what to do. There's a new game out for Nintendo Wii, Super Smash Brother Brawl. And it'a an online game, but you need codes from other gamers, to be able to play.
So, i created this site for just that ... and it's getting to be pretty popular. Well, i've spent the first week, using trial and error, learning how to use my Admin functions, and I'm happy, along with the member's feedback, with the result of my skin.
I'll explain my theme.
My favorite Brawl character is Samus Aran. She wears a powersuit, that's made of yellow, orange, red, and blue. and she has a green visor.
I based my coloring on that colored theme. It's actually a pretty good turn our since i had no idea what i was doing when i started. The only color not present is the "green"; not at first.
This was an accident, but when i thought about it i fell in love with the idea; when you highlight a thread, that thread becomes "green" ... it kinda seems you're looking through that green visor, what you look at turns green.
blue & orange are complimentary colors; and the yellow links are properly placed to not stand out and blind the viewer.
I worked hard on getting this right, my Board even has a thread will i explain the step by step process i went through in designing everything, lol ;D
If you check it out; my Sig pic there is a pic of Samus Aran; the bases for my skin colors.
thanx so much

Personally, I really hate when I come across a site that seems to show so much promise but has the worst color scheme ever. The colors that you choose for your board should definitely match not only each other, but also the theme of your subject/what you're going for. Colors shouldn't be too dark or too light to be easy on the eyes, but if you are going to choose a really dark color or a really light color as the background shades, you should be able to match the link colors not just to the background but so that the links themselves are visible to whoever is viewing. If you can't read the text on the boards, that's a hassle and a turn off. My suggestion is that as a guideline to choose your colors based on the type of banner that you have for the site, and take it from there.

I usually fall into the trap of using gray on gray. It's a bad habit but while I was looking for rpgs I found that most people used it. One rpg even had a statement attached that if you couldn't read the font, too bad for you. I left. Who wants to look at a screen that gives you headaches.
