So, you have your Proboard and you want to add some moderators, global moderators, and maybe some administrators to help you staff your forum. How should you go about doing it? It is extremely important that you only offer staff positions to people you know, and completely trust. To give staff positions to anyone else is nothing but foolish, and will do nothing but put your board into jeopardy. To try and pick up members by offering them a position on the staff is nothing but foolish and will do nothing but put your board into jeopardy. To have a problem, and make a complete stranger staff to fix your problem is nothing but complete foolishness and will do nothing but put your board into jeopardy. Proboards Support has an excellent support board with many wise volunteers and a set of administrators who can already access your board if need be - so you do not have to give staff powers to anyone to get a problem fixed.
So where should you find your staff from? If you are not making your already known friends staff, then your staff should come from your most active and contributing members who wish to be staff. The best mods you will ever find is the from the members who have been a part of your board for a good length of time, caused no trouble, ect. Those members will genuinely care about your board. If your board is not active enough to find members like that, or if your board isn't old enough to find members like that, then you do not really need any additional staff. Be sure to give the correct amount of power to each mod depending on what they are modding. Remember, all it takes is a poor password for one of your moderator's accounts to be taken over so make sure the powers are distributed wisely and all of your moderators passwords a series of random letters and numbers. For the powers, would a moderator who mods a fun and games board really need the power to modify the headers and footers? Would a moderator who mods a general board really need to have the power to delete boards? The answer is no, but would a co-admin, or a global moderator? That choice is yours, depending on what you want them to do, but be very careful what powers you give out to people, and make sure they have hard to guess/crack/break passwords.
Being an admin of a forum takes time and work if that admin wants their forum to be successful. It can be fun, yes, but it still takes time and work. All too often do I see a new admin trying to look for staff to delegate their responsibilities of adminship off to others. Those boards never make it to see daylight. So choose your staff members with great care and wisdom, and distribute their powers with great care and great wisdom. And while you're at it, have some fun!

I've been on message boards where all they do is write out an application, post it, and have members submit the application. It's a simple application with only like 5 questions asked. They won't even know the person and they allow them to become a staff member. You know what happened? I ended up having some very bad experiences with the staff members on the board and that's one of the reasons why. It was because they allowed members to become a staff member even though they didn't even know them.
I'll choose someone who I feel comfortable with after I've chatted with them. I usually have an interview with them. I ask them questions like...
1. How do you feel about staff members gossiping about other members? 2. How do you feel about staff members publcily accusing a member of what they've done wrong? 3. How many warnings should be given out to a member before they're banned? 4. What makes a board successful?
The questions go on. As you can probably tell, "Discussion: Your ProBoards" forum has actually helped me a lot.
While others haven't encouraged an interview in the past, it's actually not that bad. You want to make sure you've found someone like-minded that you are when it comes to running your board. You want to know how they're going to warn members or how they feel we should. You want to hear what they're going to do if they're an admin and they have an idea. Are they going to just change the board without your consent, or are they going to speak to you? If they tell you they'd come to you in the Interview, you hold them accountable for that.

So choose your staff members with great care and wisdom, and distribute their powers with great care and great wisdom. And while you're at it, have some fun! Hmmm...being a somewhat experienced Proboards member (and an admin of my own forum of course lol), I feel that there should be only one admin (i.e. the Main Admin) and that the rest of the staff should be mostly mods, but a couple of gmod-like staff....MAX How do I choose my staff? A good question which requires a good answer lol, which is.... I choose them according to their long-term activity and contribution. I used to just choose staff on the spot and ever since I did that, most of them have been quite lazy so I demoded a few as punishment for that and now they're just normal members. I would NEVER appoint another member to be an admin like me UNLESS I would be VERY inactive myself and that the member has proven beyond all reason to be my very best friend that I talk to regularly in an IM or something similiar. My current staff consists of myself (the main admin of course) and 1 gmod (who are the ONLY ones that can access the admin panel at will, but only I can access the headers and footers rightfully), the rest of the staff have limited powers, that way whatever action they do, ISN'T damaging the forum's outlook. What I DO NOT do and have NEVER done, is send out mass e-mails or pms about a vacant staff position - frankly, that will ultimately cause members to either block where the mass e-mail/pm comes from, or just register a different e-mail rendering the forum-registered e-mail non-existant to them. I use a sticky locked thread for this sort of thing (just once by the way) which I got rid of when I got the vacant spot filled. Frankly what I've noticed is that the majority of reports in PB support have been password-related. My advice is NEVER GIVE AWAY YOUR PASSWORD TO ANY MEMBER OR GUEST/S THAT GO TO YOUR FORUM. If this is done behind the admin's back, it will put the usefulness of the board in the large risk of hackers/crackers moving stuff around that they shouldn't and that practically is annoying (believe me....IT IS!!). I stupidly gave a member that position sometime last year and nearly costed my forum it's position on the proboards server, I taught that member a lesson by simply banning him for messing up the forum structure without my permission, this also explains why the rules on my forum appear to be somewhat very tough Anyway, that's all from me on this

When it comes to staff I am very picky, now I only choose people who I know I can absoloutly trust. For some reason I never have another admin on my forums, I feel someone who has nearly as much power as I do may as well own the forum and take all the glory for it.
As I said before I only choose people I can trust, Now I only pick members of my forum for staff who are loyal and dedicated.
One power never to give anyone would be to assign member groups then anyone can be an admin and wreck your forum.
Gmods alos have to work their way up from being a normal mod, its pointless making someone a gmod straight off.

I still haven't decided if it's a good idea or not, but all of my staff members are good friends of mine. I trust them with my life, so I'm pretty sure I can trust them with a few forums. The only reason I can see that not being a good idea is the whole "exclusivist" problem, but so far it hasn't seemed to be much of a problem, since the top poster on my forum (other than me) isn't even a staff member.
Overall, I'd say the best thing for choosing staff members is to work up gradually. The first board I spent time on was STAMods, a game modification hosting site. I spent over a year there before I became a moderator, and slowly worked my way up from moderating a single board to moderating several boards, including the General Discussion. After a while, public elections were held for Global Moderator, something I think is a good idea with a responsible member base.
Personally, I don't think administrators should be elected, rather they should be appointed by either the main admin or consensus of the existing admins (whichever applies). moderators and global moderators are slightly less powerful, and could be appointed by popular vote without too much trouble. But again, it all depends on how responsible the members are.

As a member of the Administrator Trainin Centre, I'll publicise my experiences of staff.
When I first joined ATC, I was a nobody, somebody who had a burning urge to train people and still has.
I was given a chance through a staff application. I admit at the time, the staff application was a good way of getting myself into the role of training people. I did extremely well in my duties and my continuing urge to train people.
Soon enough; Serpent saw I was a valued trainer on his board and I was truly excited at the time that he gave me the secondary admin position.
Enthralled by his decision, I couldn't thank him enough. I continued to do my duties until life caught up with me. This involved several lengthy visits to hospitals that made me unfit to train other people, even to type large amounts, it was such a struggle.
Anyway...
The moral of my experiences is:
Give a person you think has a chance at moderating your board to a high standard or even just keeping your board going forward a chance at doing what he does best.
Even if that means staff applications and interviews at the beginning just to get that person the smallest role at your board, it could be the best decision you have ever made. Serpent and I are good friends and we trust each other enough to make the board a success.
Everybody has potential, you have to give that person a chance and make them shine in their role. If they are helpful, reliable, committed, thoughtful etc... then relish them for what they are.
This doesn't have to be a security risk. A person with minimal powers can't really disrupt your board as everything that person does should be monitored to start off with.

Dont make anyone staff. I learnt the hard way. I wouldn't recommend not making other members staff, you as the main admin can not mod the whole forum 24 hours a day. Pay attention on your forum to your members. If you see 1 member that is always active, or always helping people out on your forum day in and day out, think about making that member a staff member. You could make that member a moderator and give very little powers to start out with. Like only give power to lock, sticky, move...etc. Once that member after awhile proves to be a good mod, increase powers a little. If you can not trust your staff members to run the forum the way you want to, besides following the proboards TOS then don't make em a staff member. No one can run a forum by themselves. In time your forum will get more members and get more active. There is no way you can run forum by yourselff unless you are superman. It's a risk you are taking by making someone a staff member, but it's always good to have some help for when you not online or gone for a few day's. Don't think all your members will be good and follow all your rules everyday.

What made you decide each member was right for the job? When posting here, please be sure to contribute to the conversations. As for your question, please do not double post, and please ask questions like that in the Support board.

It is obvious that not go about and hire strangers.
Also, you cannot always go to the other way.
Meaning that you cannot all hire your friends as staffs. Just because they're your friends. First consider that will that move benefit you have your forum.
Most of the time, your friends go on your forum just because they're your friends. THey will not work any more or less if you assign them staff positions. And even sometimes friends are staffs would turn your forum into a joke.

I've seen a lot of stuff saying you should have 1 staff member : every 10 active members, but I think that it depends on the admin. Some admins can handle the majority of the problems themseleves, others have a harder time. A staff member pretty much has to have good grammar, has to be friendly, and has to know what they are talking about.

I limit my actual staff pretty tightly, any of my staff i have, I actually know in person except one person who I have chatted with for 2 years on a website and I let her be a regular mod to help stop any general rule breaking.
My friends dont turn my site into a joke but they usually dont do their job, so I find them one task, and one task only and let them focus on that and let them have fun the rest of the time.
